Karate Training and Certifications

  • 1981: Began training in Shotokan Karate at San Francisco State University with Sensei Mayer Parry.
  • 1983: Started training with Sensei Leroy Rodrigues at the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate dojo, South San Francisco Parks & Recreation Center.
  • July 1986: Achieved Shodan rank (First Degree Black Belt) in Shorinji Ryu Karate-Do and Shotokan Karate with Sensei Leroy Rodrigues.
  • August 1986:  Formally began teaching at the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate dojo.
  • August 1988: Achieved Nidan rank at the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate dojo.
  • August 1993: Achieved Sandan at the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate dojo.
  • March 1995: Achieved Yondan with Shinkyu Shotokan Karate dojo.
  • 1998 ~ 2006: Enhanced training with Sensei Al McGaughey at Pine Waves Karate Academy.
  • October 2002: Achieved Godan with the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate dojo.
  • February 2003: Awarded title of Sensei and Senior Instructor at Pine Waves Karate Academy.
  • June 2006: Achieved Rokudan with the International Soceity of Okinawan / Japanese Karate-Do.
  • November 2006: Achieved Rokudan with the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate dojo.
  • May 2016:  Achieved Nanadan with the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate dojo.
  • All above dan ranks awarded by Sensei Leroy Rodrigues.

 

 Championships

  • Began competing in 1983 as a brown belt and took first place in kumite. Has competed since 1983 in many local and regional karate tournaments, consistently placing in the top three finalists in both kata and kumite.
  • Won the Northern California Karate Championships, Kanazawa Cup, and Grand Champion in the All American ATAMA Classic.
  • 2008 Ozawa International Tournament (Las Vegas) silver medalist in senior Kata and Kumite black belt divisions
  • March 23, 2014 AMAS tournament in South San Francisco - Gold medalist in both kata and kumite
